Ordering Coffee in Rome: 5 Italian Phrases for the Bar

Ordering Coffee in Rome: 5 Italian Phrases for the Bar

In Rome, coffee culture is fast, friendly, and full of small rituals. Un caffè means an espresso. Many people drink it standing al banco. And in a lot of bars you pay at the cassa first, then take your receipt to the counter.

These five Italian phrases — with the replies you're likely to hear — will get you through a classic Roman coffee stop.

1. "Un caffè, per favore."

In Italy, un caffè is an espresso — not a large American-style coffee.

Un caffè in Italy is an espresso

  • You: Buongiorno! Un caffè, per favore.
  • Barista: Subito! — Right away!

Always greet first: Buongiorno (morning) or Buonasera (evening). Then place the order.

2. "Un macchiato, per favore."

A macchiato is an espresso with a splash of milk.

A macchiato is an espresso with a splash of milk

  • You: Un macchiato, per favore.
  • Barista: Caldo o freddo? — Hot or cold milk?

Answer Caldo or Freddo — or simply Caldo, grazie. If you want a longer coffee with more milk, ask for a cappuccino (traditionally a morning drink).

3. "Al banco o al tavolo?"

Al banco is at the counter; al tavolo is at a table

  • Barista: Al banco o al tavolo? — At the counter or at a table?
  • You: Al banco, grazie.

Standing at the counter is the classic, quicker (and usually cheaper) way. Sitting at a table can mean table service and a higher price in tourist areas — still fine, just know the difference.

4. "Pago prima?"

In many Roman bars you pay at the till first, then show the receipt at the counter.

  • You: Pago prima? — Do I pay first?
  • Barista: Sì, alla cassa, poi lo scontrino al banco. — Yes, at the till, then bring the receipt to the counter.

If you're unsure, Pago prima? is a polite way to ask. Look for the cassa near the entrance.

5. "E un cornetto, per favore."

A cornetto is the Italian croissant-style pastry, often with coffee in the morning.

Ordering a cornetto with coffee

  • You: E un cornetto, per favore.
  • Barista: Vuoto o alla crema? — Plain or cream-filled?

Other fillings you may hear: alla marmellata (jam), al cioccolato. Vuoto = plain / empty.

Quick practice

Say the full flow out loud:

  1. Buongiorno! Un caffè, per favore.
  2. Un macchiato, per favore. → reply to Caldo o freddo?
  3. Al banco, grazie.
  4. Pago prima?
  5. E un cornetto, per favore. → Alla crema, grazie.

Mini quiz: the barista asks Al banco o al tavolo? and you want the classic standing coffee → Al banco, grazie.
