5 Common Italian Mistakes English Speakers Make
Italian and English share enough Latin that a word can look finished when it is not, and English "I am" covers several Italian verbs. These five come up in ordinary life: feeling hot, reading a label, a hotel room, a wrong workplace, and your age.

1. Feeling hot is avere, not essere
Italian puts a set of bodily sensations with avere, not with essere. You do not "are" hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, or sleepy. You "have" that state:
- Ho caldo. — I feel hot.
- Ho freddo. — I feel cold.
- Ho fame. — I'm hungry.
- Ho sete. — I'm thirsty.
- Ho sonno. — I'm sleepy.
Ho caldo. Puoi aprire la finestra? — I'm hot. Can you open the window?
Sono caldo or sono calda said about yourself is a different sentence. People often hear it as "I'm hot" in a sexual sense, not as "the room is too warm". That is why the textbook warning exists.
The thing that has a temperature uses essere, because you are describing the thing, not your sensation: Il caffè è caldo — the coffee is hot. La minestra è fredda — the soup is cold. So "I feel hot" and "the soup is hot" are not the same verb. One is ho caldo. The other is è caldo or è calda, agreeing with the soup or the coffee.
2. Preservativo means condom
English "preservative" suggests preservativo. In Italian that word is a condom: Il preservativo è un metodo contraccettivo. A food preservative is a conservante: un conservante alimentare.
If you are describing a label, an ingredient list, or something the cook added so the sauce would keep, you want conservante. Preservativo belongs in a pharmacy conversation, and it will be understood that way if you drop it into a recipe.
3. Camera is a room
Camera is a room, often a bedroom: La camera è molto luminosa — the room is very bright. In a hotel, camera doppia is a double room and camera singola is a single. None of that is a device that takes photos.
A camera is a macchina fotografica, also called a fotocamera: Dov'è la macchina fotografica? — where's the camera? Ho dimenticato la camera names a room. On a trip, if you meant the device, you have named the wrong object. English camera comes from Latin camera obscura ("dark chamber"), not from a modern Italian word for the device. Italian camera is still the room.
4. Fattoria is a farm, not a factory
Fattoria is a farm: La fattoria ha molti animali — the farm has a lot of animals. A factory is a fabbrica: Lavoro in una fabbrica — I work in a factory.
Lavoro in una fattoria is a fine sentence if you work with animals or crops. It is the wrong sentence if you work on a production line. English "factory" and Italian fattoria are close enough to swap when you are tired, and they describe different places. A company in the business sense is often an azienda, which is a third word and not a farm either.
5. Age uses avere
Sono 30 is the English pattern. The full Italian line is Ho 30 anni — I have 30 years. Learn it with anni.
- Ho 22 anni. — I'm 22.
- Quanti anni hai? — How old are you?
The question is "how many years do you have?", so the verb is avere. If that question has just been asked, Ho 22 is a possible short answer: anni is already understood. If age is not the topic, do not drop anni. This is the same family as Spanish tener, Portuguese ter, and French avoir.
Why these cluster
Lookalikes (camera, fattoria, preservativo) feel safe because the spelling is almost English. Sensations and age feel safe because English uses "to be" for all of them. The fix is to pause on two questions: is this a word that only looks shared, and is this a state Italian expresses with avere? Those two checks cover the five sentences on this page. They do not cover every false friend in the language.
Practice
Match the intention, then say the Italian.
- You feel hot and you said Sono caldo.
- You are reading a food label and you said preservativo.
- You cannot find the device you take photos with and you said la camera.
- You work in a plant that makes goods and you said fattoria.
- You are 22 and you said Sono 22.
Answer key
- Ho caldo. Sensations of this kind use avere. Sono caldo about a person is often heard as sexual, not as "I'm too warm". If the coffee is hot, that is different: Il caffè è caldo.
- Conservante. A preservativo is a condom. The additive in food is a conservante.
- La macchina fotografica or la fotocamera. Camera is the room. Camera doppia is a double room in a hotel.
- Fabbrica. A fattoria is a farm. Lavoro in una fabbrica is the factory job.
- The full model is Ho 22 anni. Age uses avere. Sono 22 is the wrong verb. After Quanti anni hai?, Ho 22 can stand alone, because anni is in the question. Keep anni when nobody has asked your age yet.
