Por vs Para in Spanish: 5 Mix-Ups to Drop

Por vs Para in Spanish: 5 Mix-Ups to Drop

If you want to learn Spanish that sounds natural, por vs para is one of the first grammar knots to untie. Both can translate as "for" in English — and that single overlap causes most of the confusion. The good news: a few clear patterns cover the situations you hit every day.

This guide walks through five mix-ups English speakers make all the time. Each one includes the wrong version, the right version, and a short example you can say out loud.

1. Purpose / goal → use para

Purpose and goals use para

Wrong: Estudio español por viajar. Right: Estudio español para viajar.

When you study, work, or save money in order to do something, Spanish uses para. Think of it as pointing towards a goal.

Example: Estudio español para trabajar en México. (I'm studying Spanish to work in Mexico.)

More: Ahorro para un viaje. / Entreno para el maratón.

2. Through / along a place → use por

Movement through a place uses por

Wrong: Voy para el parque (when you mean you're going through it). Right: Voy por el parque.

Por covers movement through, along, or around a place. Destination ("I'm going to the park") is usually a or hacia: Voy al parque.

Example: Caminamos por el parque cada mañana. (We walk through the park every morning.)

More: Pasamos por el centro. / Mira por la ventana.

3. Deadlines → use para

Deadlines use para

Wrong: Lo necesito por mañana. Right: Lo necesito para mañana.

A due date or deadline takes para. You're aiming at a point in time.

Example: El informe es para el viernes. (The report is due Friday.)

More: La tarea es para el lunes. / Lo quiero para esta noche.

4. Thanks and reasons → use por

Thanks and reasons use por

Wrong: Gracias para tu ayuda. Right: Gracias por tu ayuda.

When you thank someone for something, or explain a reason ("because of"), use por.

Example: Gracias por tu ayuda con la mudanza. (Thanks for your help with the move.)

More: Gracias por venir. / Lo hice por ti (because of you / for your sake).

5. Beneficiary (a gift for someone) → use para

A gift for someone uses para

Wrong: Compré esto por mi hermana (when you mean she is the recipient). Right: Compré esto para mi hermana.

The person who receives something takes para. Por can mean "on behalf of" or "in exchange for," which is a different idea.

Example: Compré flores para mi hermana. (I bought flowers for my sister.)

More: Este regalo es para ti. / Pagué 20 euros por el libro (exchange).

Quick practice quiz

Choose por or para:

  1. Estudio francés ___ viajar a París.
  2. Caminamos ___ la playa.
  3. El proyecto es ___ el martes.
  4. Gracias ___ la invitación.
  5. Compré un café ___ mi colega.

Answers: 1 para · 2 por · 3 para · 4 por · 5 para

Say each full sentence out loud twice. If you hesitate, you're still mapping English "for" onto one Spanish word — pause and pick the pattern instead.

A simple memory hook

When you're stuck, ask two questions:

  1. Am I aiming at a goal, deadline, or recipient? → try para.
  2. Am I talking about a reason, a route through somewhere, or an exchange? → try por.

It isn't every rule in the textbook — just the filter that fixes most everyday sentences. Then check against the five patterns above.

Extra practice sentences

  • Trabajo para una empresa en Bogotá.
  • Pasamos por Madrid de camino a Sevilla.
  • Esta carta es para usted.
  • Lo hice por error.
  • Estudio para el examen de mañana.

Read them aloud, cover the preposition, and fill it back in from memory.
