Italian Pronunciation: 5 Traps to Master
If you're ready to learn Italian that people understand the first time, pronunciation matters as much as grammar. Italian spelling is friendly — once you know a few letter-combo rules. Miss those, and ciao, famiglia, and gnocchi come out sounding English.
These five traps cover the patterns English speakers hit most: c/ch, g/gh, gli, gn, and sc/sch. Each includes a wrong guess, the right sound, and a sentence to say out loud.
1. c / ch before e or i

Wrong: ciao = "kee-ow" Right: ciao = "CHAOW" (/tʃ/)
Rule: c + e/i = /tʃ/ (like English ch in church): ciao, cena, cinema. ch + e/i = hard /k/: chi, che, perché.
Example: Ciao! Chi viene a cena? (Hi! Who's coming to dinner?) — ciao soft, chi hard.
2. g / gh before e or i

Wrong: gelato = hard g ("ge-lah-to") Right: gelato = "je-LAH-to" (/dʒ/)
Rule: g + e/i = /dʒ/ (like j in jeans): gelato, giro, gente. gh + e/i = hard /g/: spaghetti, laghi.
Example: Vorrei un gelato, grazie. (I'd like a gelato, thanks.)
3. gli → usually one sound /ʎ/

Wrong: famiglia = "fa-mig-lee-a" Right: famiglia = "fa-MEE-lya" (/ʎ/)
Gli is usually a single sound, close to the "lli" in English million. Don't split it into "g-lee."
Example: La mia famiglia abita a Roma. (My family lives in Rome.)
Also: figlio, bottiglia, meglio.
4. gn → /ɲ/ (like "ny" in canyon)

Wrong: gnocchi = "guh-nok-kee" Right: gnocchi = "NYOK-kee" (/ɲ/)
Gn is one nasal sound. Same family as Spanish ñ.
Example: Ordino gli gnocchi al pesto. (I'll have the gnocchi with pesto.)
Also: bagno, lasagne, signora.
5. sc / sch before e or i

Wrong: pesce = "pes-ke" Right: pesce = "PEH-sheh" (/ʃ/)
Rule: sc + e/i = /ʃ/ (like sh): pesce, scegli, scienza. sch + e/i = /sk/: schema, boschi.
Example: Il pesce è fresco oggi. (The fish is fresh today.)

How to practise without a classroom
Pronunciation improves when your mouth repeats the same gesture. Whispering while scrolling doesn't count. Stand up, exaggerate once, then say it at normal volume.
Two-minute daily set
- Ciao! Chi viene a cena? (c vs ch)
- Vorrei un gelato, grazie. (soft g)
- La mia famiglia abita a Roma. (gli)
- Ordino gli gnocchi al pesto. (gn)
- Il pesce è fresco oggi. (sc)
Do the set morning and night for a week. If one line always breaks, loop only that line ten times.
Listening tip
When you watch an Italian clip, hunt for gn and gli words and pause. Shadow the speaker once. Your ear trains the target; your mouth copies it.
