Café and Small Talk in English: 5 Mini-Dialogues

Café and Small Talk in English: 5 Mini-Dialogues

If you want to learn English that sounds natural, memorising lists isn't enough. You need short lines you already use in real life: ordering a coffee, answering "how's your day going?", or asking for the bill without translating word for word.

Here are five café and small-talk mini-dialogues. Each one includes what you say, what you usually hear back, and a quick note. Read them out loud. Then record yourself. Then use them the next time you can.

1. Ordering coffee: "Can I get a latte, please?"

Meaning: ¿Me da un latte, por favor?

In cafés in the US or the UK, "Can I get…?" sounds very natural. You'll also hear "Could I have…?" or "I'll have…".

Ordering a latte with Can I get…?

Dialogue

  • Barista: Hi! What can I get you? (¡Hola! ¿Qué te sirvo?)
  • You: Can I get a latte, please?

Try variations: Can I get a cappuccino? / Can I get an iced coffee?

2. For here or to go: "For here or to go?"

Meaning: ¿Para aquí o para llevar?

Easy replies:

  • For here, please. (Para aquí.)
  • To go, please. (Para llevar.)

For here or to go

Dialogue

  • Barista: For here or to go?
  • You: For here, please.

Tip: in some places you'll hear "Eat in or takeaway?" (more UK).

3. Short small talk: "How's your day going?"

Meaning: ¿Cómo te va el día?

You don't need a long story. A short, friendly answer is enough.

Answering How's your day going?

Dialogue

  • Them: How's your day going?
  • You: Pretty good, thanks. And yours?

Other replies: Not bad. / Busy, but good. / Can't complain.

4. Introductions: "Nice to meet you."

Meaning: Encantado/a de conocerte.

After you say your name, this line closes the greeting naturally.

Nice to meet you after an introduction

Dialogue

  • You: I'm Carlos. Nice to meet you.
  • Them: Nice to meet you too, Carlos.

Variants: Good to meet you. / Pleased to meet you. (a little more formal).

5. Asking for the bill: "Could I get the check, please?"

Meaning: ¿Me trae la cuenta, por favor?

In the US people say the check. In the UK and Australia, the bill.

Asking for the check or the bill

Dialogue

  • You: Could I get the check, please?
  • Server: Sure — I'll bring it right over. (Claro, te la traigo ahora.)

Also: Can we get the bill? (if there are a few of you).

Mini practice

Say these out loud (without looking):

  1. Order a latte.
  2. Answer "for here".
  3. Reply to "How's your day going?"
  4. Introduce yourself and say "Nice to meet you."
  5. Ask for the bill.

Did you stumble on one? That's the line to repeat three times tomorrow.

Why practise out loud

English that feels "correct" in your head doesn't always come out the same way. Small talk is fast: the barista is already on the next question while you're still translating. That's why these dialogues are short on purpose.

A 5-minute routine

  1. Read the dialogue once in silence.
  2. Read it out loud while looking at the text.
  3. Cover the reply and say it from memory.
  4. Change one detail (latte → cappuccino, Carlos → your name).
  5. Record 30 seconds and listen back.

If you sound robotic, slow down. Clarity matters more than speed in the first month.

Extra café lines

  • Do you have oat milk?
  • Can I get that iced?
  • That'll be all, thanks.
  • Have a good one.

Add them once the five dialogues come out without thinking.
